Chuck McMichael has been a professional music educator for "too many decades to remember." The West Texas school power bands were the world which molded Chuck's love of band, drumming and music. Great directors, including Scott Lewis, Ike Nail, Dr. Tommy Fry and Dwight Toombs were his early mentors. His professional career includes playing, writing, arranging, repair, refinishing, and rebuilding all types of drum and percussion instruments.
His music degree is from Ottawa University in Ottawa Kansas. During this time Chuck studied under George Boberg at K.U. Mr. McMichael's playing/teaching credentials hail from countless classrooms, band programs, smoky night club stages, teaching clinics, the Road, several amazing evenings spent with folks like Louie Bellson learning brushes and double bass technique, plus, the thousands of former students he has taught over a forty-five year career that is still on going.
"Mr. Mac," as all of his students know him, has had the privilege of being married to an amazing master choral educator Mary Lynn McMichael ( Mrs. Mac). Together their careers span over five decades of serving music students and school programs in music education. In the mid 90's they co-created Four Fish Fly Free, an elementary music education video series, which subsequently received numerous recognitions including Parent Choice Awards, Dove Family Foundation Awards, and four Telly Awards. Mr. and Mrs. McMichael were also featured in the January 2010 issue of "Teaching Music Magazine," a national publication of MENC. Their students continue to be highly successful at District, Region and All State competitions.
"I have quite a few students who have gone on to professional music teaching careers, as well as many who play professionally. I have all of my teachers, my wife Mary Lynn, Mr. Stephen Henry (Texas Honor Band Director) and the talent of the very gifted Carey Hoffman to thank for their constant encouragement and desire to see the learning bar raised instead of lowered to nurture beginning music students."
Mr. Mac would also like to thank life long friend Mr. Randy Jones for helping to underwrite the publishing costs of Sticks on Skins Master Method book series.
Book 3 - Drum Set, Beginning Drum Line and Hand Drums will be ready, (fingers crossed) by September 30th, 2019
